Ford pardoned Nixon, not out of fear that Nixon’s cultish following would
Roam the streets violently, but because he thought the country needed to heal and the presidency would be diminished. He wasn’t intimidated by threats of violence into placing Nixon above the law.
People agree and disagree with his decision, but most agree Ford was trying to put country above personal ambition - he knew he’d be hurting his future political prospects.
Here, you seem to be advocating letting Trump slide because we’re afraid of the illegal violence his followers will reign down on us. That’s a terrible precedent to set. Our justice system can be intimidated into letting a criminal slide? What ever happened to “without fear or favor?”
There is no “rush to judgement” against Trump in our courts. It is unlikely we’ll have trials in any cases before the election, and when and if Trump is tried, he will have been publicly defending himself for months or years, he will enjoy full presumption of innocence in court, he will have the best legal defense he can gather, etc. It is anything but a rush to judgement.
NY, Atlanta, Florida, and DC all prepared for violent protests when Trump went to court for arraignments. In no case did they materialize. Which suggests your predictions about a Trump conviction are far from iron-clad, and in any event, a nation of laws pursues justice for all without fear or favor. I think we should prepare for the worst if convictions occur, and we have law enforcement resources to do that, but if we intend to emerge from the era of Trump as a nation of laws, we as a nation will not be intimidated into dropping actions for an alleged attempted coup. Or the other crimes with which Trump’s currently charged. [Post edited by hoolstoptheheels at 08/21/2023 10:52AM]
